Hamza Chowdhury (born 1 October 1997) is a British professional footballer of Bangladeshi descent. He currently plays as a midfielder for Sheffield United Football Club in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English professional football leagues, and for Bangladesh. He primarily plays as a defensive midfielder, but has also played as a central midfielder.
The Bangladesh Football Federation announced on 19 December 2024 that Hamza had been officially cleared to play for the Bangladesh national football team.[3]
Personal life

Hamza was born in Leicestershire, England.[4] He is of dual Bangladeshi and Grenadian descent. Hamza was raised in a traditional Bengali Muslim family by his mother and stepfather, and has been visiting Bangladesh since childhood. His ancestral home is in Bahuballe, Habiganj, Bangladesh. His stepfather is also Bengali. Chowdhury can speak Sylheti. He is eligible to play for the Grenada national team through his ancestry. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
Chowdhury is a Sunni Muslim and has stated that he attended evening religious school in his youth. He has stated that before leaving the changing room for matches, he recites portions of the Quran in Arabic, such as the Ayat al-Kursi and various duas. [6]
In April 2019, he apologized for a historic tweet. [17] He was later charged with misconduct and fined €5,000 and placed on an educational course. [18]
He and his wife have three children, born in 2018, 2020 and 2023. [19]
Support for Palestine

After winning the FA Cup Final in 2021, Hamza celebrated the victory by raising the Palestinian flag with a friend, while the Palestinian-Israeli conflict was ongoing. [20][21]
Club career[edit source]
Hamza began his playing career playing for English club Leicester City's academy during the 2011–12 season, and at the age of 16, he attracted the attention of several top European clubs.[22] On 27 February 2016, he joined League One club Burton Albion on a one-month loan deal.[23] On the same day, he made his English Football League debut, coming on as a 77th-minute substitute for Tom Naylor.[24] The match ended in a 0–0 draw against Walsall at the Firelli Stadium in Burton, England.[25] He spent two seasons at Burton Albion, making 26 appearances.
